Learning from Our Forebears and Preparing to Explore
Grades 2 and 3: During the fall, our Unitarian Universalist children will be inspired by the exceptional lives of Unitarian Universalists “superheroes” past and present, whose courageous spirit and fearless goodwill illuminate a path toward a fairer and more just world. In the spring, our children will turn their attention to the superheroes of the Bible – from whom we also draw inspiration and learning. The curricula for this year come from Gaia Brown, author of both “UU Superheroes” and “Superheroes: Bible People.”
The UU SUPERHEROES curriculum, written by Gaia Brown, introduces children to stories of Unitarians, Universalists and Unitarian Universalists who have acted with courage and wisdom in their attempts to live their lives fully and make the world a better place for others.
Each week our children will hear a story about part of the life of a “superhero.” The class will share songs, games, plays and projects to help illustrate the stories. and help students get to know each hero’s lives and work. At the end of the session, children will discuss which of the 7 UU principles were important to the superhero and reflect on the information they have learned. Class participants will also learn how to work cooperatively in the group, playing and creating together, and will learn how to use their own “superpowers” as they interact with the world around them, growing both spiritually and ethically.
In Term 2, we will meet some SUPERHEROES: BIBLE PEOPLE and explore some of the major figures in the Bible (David, Moses, Miriam) who have acted with courage and wisdom in their attempts to live their lives fully and shape our world for the better. The class will also explore ways to move the saving vision of the ‘superheroes’ they study into today’s world, through service projects and possibly, occasional field trips.
