Church Buildings

The Old Church Building

The "Society" was gathered in 1730, but the original meetinghouse was replaced by the present building in 1817, with some of the timbers from the first church saved from the "great gale" of September 1815.

The New Church Building

Built in 1817 to replace the old one damaged in a storm the present church of First Parish in Bedford stands on Bedford Common. The town common is split diagonally just in front of church with the front half owned and mantained by the Town of Bedford and the rear maintained by First Parish. This was established by a joint covenent in 1978, after a dispute over cutting down trees (see Splitting the Common).

The main church building has been expanded several times over its history, first to provide elevator access to the second floor, then later to add classrooms to the rear of the building, and most recently to add a new Great Room, several new classrooms, staff offices, a conference room, etc.
